Can You Identify Menopause Symptoms When They Occur?

By Casey S Nears

As much as many women may complain about their monthly menstrual cycles, the fact is that it is rare that a woman looks forward to going through menopause. The simple fact is that menopause is a very hard time for women to go through. In a lot of ways it can be akin to going through another puberty but, this time, the woman knows exactly what is happening to her and how her menopause symptoms are affecting her loved ones’ lives. It’s important that each person understands the different symptoms of menopause so that they can help the women they know work through the difficult transition. Here are some of the symptoms you should watch out for if one of the women you love is close to the age for going through menopause.

Many women will start to gain more weight when they begin going through menopause. Unlike other types of weight gain, however, this menopause symptom is localized. A woman going through menopause will gain the most weight in their waist and their thighs. This will usually cause a woman’s waistline to disappear. Weight gain is something that most women do not enjoy. Weight gain in these areas, however, is even more traumatic. If you experience an increase in inches in these areas, especially if you typically “store your weight” somewhere else, you should consult your doctor. You might be starting to show signs of menopause.

One of the cruelest symptoms of menopause makes a women feel as though she’s pregnant. If you experience extreme fatigue you could be pregnant or premenopausal. “Crashing” fatigue is a common symptom of menopause. Just feeling a little tired does not fit the criteria for crashing fatigue. This is the kind of fatigue that might prevent her from being able to get out of bed at all. The fatigue she might feel could cause her to require several hours of sleep in the middle of the day. If a woman in your life is suddenly experiencing intense fatigue it is possible that she is going through menopause.

An increase in itching is a symptom of menopause that most people don’t recognize. Some women who are dealing with the change of life say that their skin constantly itches and crawls. This is a different feeling than you get with dry skin.

The best description is “it’s like ants are crawling through my skin.” This can be hard to deal with if you don’t know what you are going through. You should call your doctor if your skin is particularly itchy or you can’t seem to stop scratching. You might have developed a simple skin condition. It might also be one of the signs that you are about to go through menopause (or have started going through menopause already). Menopause symptoms are widely varied. No two women will experience menopause in the exact same way. For some the symptoms are mild. Other women have incredibly intense and hard to deal with symptoms. Understanding the symptoms of menopause can do quite a lot both for you (if you are going through it) and the people in your life (who will be helping you through it). This article lists just a few of the menopause symptoms you might have to deal with. You should talk to your doctor so that you can learn what else to watch for.
